St James was built in the 1850's by tangata whenua, with rock carried down from Te Pane o Mataoho/Māngere mountain. Rev Arthur Purchas and Tamati Ngāpora worked together to see the project completed. The church has since withstood a contested history over the last 165 years through the challenges and changes of migration and colonisation. The urupā which surrounds the church is a sacred resting place for tangata whenua and is overseen by Waikato-Tainui. The church and urupā stand as both testimony and reminder of the importance of bi-cultural partnership in our communities.
